Kimbrel nearing contract decision

Brewers in the mix for him, Keuchel

The top two pitchers in the free agent market -- Craig Kimbrel and Dallas Keuchel -- have stayed there nearly three weeks into the start of the regular season. With the calendar continuing to turn, the pair of pitchers, and their agents, remain in negotiations with teams to get on the mound this season. As their demands and leverage drop, the Brewers remain in talks with their representation to get a deal done. According to MLB Network's Jon Morosi, the Crew isn't just a team in the mix, they're a team that makes sense:

Both could provide a lift to their respective parts of the pitching staff if they can deliver the way they have in recent years.

With Corey Knebel done for the season and Jeremy Jeffress coming back from injury, Kimbrel's 1.91 career ERA, 333 saves and World Series experience would certainly help the bullpen -- both in terms of production and easing the necessity of pitching Josh Hader and Jeffress in high-leverage situations. Keuchel, on the other hand, brings a career 3.66 ERA, a Cy Young award and, again, World Series experience; an embodiment of success and durability that would join a starting rotation that has struggled to keep runs off the board and pitch deep into games...outside of Zach Davies.
