Sheboygan Falls, WI – Packers CEO/President Mark Murphy says the team made a run at linebacker Khalil Mack last summer, but says the Oakland Raiders went with a deal offered by the Chicago Bears in part because they thought the Packers would have a better 2018 season, and thus their draft picks acquired in a trade would not be as high as Chicago under first year head coach Matt Nagy.

“Well the whole Khalil Mack thing. It’s not that we didn’t try,” Murphy explained to The FAN’s Gary Ellerson live on The BIG SHOW from the Packers Hall of Fame Golf Outing at The Bull at Pinehurst Farms. “We were aggressive. We wanted to sign him. I think, ironically, the Raiders took the Bears offer because they thought they would be a better draft pick."

Murphy also questioned if paying Aaron Rodgers $134 million in a new contract, then following up with a $90 million deal for Mack would have made financial sense.

“I don’t know if it is good to have the highest paid offensive player in the league, and the highest paid defensive player in the league,” asked Murphy.  “Is that a good way to build a team?”

Murphy was asked about the fallout around the league this spring after former Packers reporter Tyler Dunne, now with the Bleacher Report, revealed disputes within the organization that lead to the firing of head coach Mike McCarthy.

“I think it’s much about nothing,” Murphy who replied, although he did declare during a press conference the team had become divided into “silos.”

“Mike and Aaron had a great run,” said Murphy.  “I think Aaron and Matt LaFleur are going to really do well together. Matt is an innovative, creative offensive coach. It’s going to be a challenge for Aaron. He’s been in one system his whole career. But I’m excited. I think you are going to see some things on offense that we have not seen in the past.”

What did Murphy think after watching LaFleur and his coaching staff of 24 perform during the team’s OTA’s and Mini Camps in May and June?

“I’m really excited about our new head coach Matt LaFleur,” said Murphy. “I think he’s going to be a really good fit for this community and the organization. It’s a big change for us. Mike McCarthy had great success for us. And hopefully he’ll get a chance to get back into the league as a head coach.”
