MILWAUKEE-- Reigning NL MVP Christian Yelich fractured his kneecap after fouling a ball off of his knee in the first inning of a 4-3 win against the Miami Marlins on Tuesday. Yelich will miss the remainder of the season. He will fly back to Milwaukee tomorrow for further evaluation.

Yelich will finish the season with MVP-like numbers yet again. He hit .329 with a career-high 44 homers, and 97 RBI's.

Here is David Stearns on the injury via MLB reporter Christina De Nola:

Before that devastating news ruined the night of every Brewers' fan, the Crew won a close 4-3 game with the Miami Marlins. According to Craig Counsell, the team heard of the Yelich news in the fourth inning and they went 17 up, 17 down after that news broke.

However, the Brewers won the game 4-3, and battled back after the Marlins tied the game in the bottom of the eighth inning.

September call-up Tyler Austin knocked a fly ball to center and Yasmani Grandal tested Marlins' CF Lewis Brinson's arm by tagging up on a short fly ball.

Grandal's run would win the Crew the game, but the loss of Yelich would hit much harder.

The Brewers have now won 5 in row and 8 of their last 10. With 18 games to go, Milwaukee could be a game out of the NL Wild Card slot without their MVP if the Cubs fall on Tuesday night.
