GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Return specialist Tremon Smith, following a three-week hiatus, will rejoin the Packers active roster.

Acquired ahead of the team's Week 3 game against the Broncos, Smith suited-up for three games -- against the Broncos, Eagles and Cowboys -- in three weeks before being released and signed to the practice squad. In those three games, Smith returned three kicks and no punts -- the longest for 25 yards.

His initial release had more to do with roster composition than production. His release made room for tight end Evan Baylis during a window in which active tight ends Jimmy Graham, Marcedes Lewis and Robert Tonyan all appeared on the injury report headed into Week 6 against the Lions. In that game, Darrius Shepherd took over kick return duties. He later muffed a punt, dropped a pass leading to an interception and has struggled in general returning punts.

Somewhat ironically, Baylis and Shepherd were released to create roster space for Smith.
